Rhys's Story
Rhys Drayson accessed the combination of Atezolizumab with Bevacizumab through a clinical trial. Considered standard of care in many similar countries, this treatment was out of reach to many as it was unfunded in New Zealand. Rhys was looking at remortgaging his house to afford the $100,000 that the treatment would have cost him, so he felt like he had "won the golden ticket."
During his treatment, Rhys helped Gut Cancer Foundation raise awareness and advocate for the benefits of these drugs which are now funded and available to all eligible patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Rhys says it had extended his life beyond the up to 12 months he was given and he is pleased that he was able to help get these drugs funded for Kiwis with liver cancer.
