Liver Cancer Awareness Month
Te marama aroā mate pukupuku Puku
October is Liver Cancer Awareness Month.
Do you know the risks?
This month, Gut Cancer Foundation is shining a light on liver cancer, the factors that can increase risk, and the symptoms of the disease. Through leading research and innovation, awareness and education, advocacy and patient support, we have a mission to improve and save the lives of all New Zealanders affected by liver cancer.
Help us to raise crucial awareness this October for those who are impacted by liver cancer in Aotearoa.
360+
Over 360 people are diagnosed with liver cancer in NZ every year.
3x

Unfortunately, just 21% of liver cancer patients are expected to survive beyond 5 years.

Personal Stories
Journeys of triumph, resilience and sadness told by patients and whānau affected by liver cancer in New Zealand.
Rhys' Story
Rhys contracted Hepatitis C from a blood transfusion after an accident. Though he was cleared of the virus in 2015, he was warned of potential liver damage and the risk of HCC. Two years ago, cancer was discovered, but by then it had spread to his lymph nodes, making surgery or a transplant impossible. In 2023, Rhys joined a clinical trial and has been given Atezolizumab and Bevacizumab. His oncologist is reporting a complete response, though Rhys remains realistic - knowing the treatment extends his life but isn't a cure.
Ken's Story
Ken was diagnosed with advanced liver cancer in March 2023, after routine blood tests revealed elevated markers. An MRI confirmed a 7cm tumour. Initial surgery in Auckland showed positive results, but later scans revealed the tumour had grown toward his arteries, ruling out a transplant. Thanks to his health insurance, Ken could access the unfunded immunotherapy combination, Atezolizumab and Bevacizumab, with positive results - his tumour is shrinking. His treatment aims to prolong life with quality, and despite setbacks, he remains optimistic.
