November is Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month

This November, Gut Cancer Foundation is shining a light on pancreatic cancer, its risks, symptoms, and the importance of early detection. With a commitment to vital research, education, advocacy, and patient support, our mission is to improve and save the lives of all Kiwis affected by pancreatic cancer (which has the worst survival rate of any major cancer).

Over 700 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in NZ every year.

is the 5 year survival rate for those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer has the worst survival rate of any major cancer.

46% of pancreatic cancer patients are diagnosed in an emergency setting, which drastically impacts survival rates.

Do you know the symptoms & risks?

Pancreatic cancer symptoms can be hard to spot and easily misdiagnosed. Awareness of the risks and signs can lead to earlier detection and better outcomes.

Symptoms

  • Excessive tiredness or weakness

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Loss of appetite

  • Abdominal pain radiating to mid back

  • Indigestion

  • New-onset diabetes

  • Changes in stool

  • Dark urine

Risks
Alongside lifestyle factors such as high alcohol consumption and smoking, these factors can increase risk of developing pancreatic cancer

  • A history of diabetes

  • Pancreatitis - diagnosed or a family history

  • Inherited syndromes such as Lynch Syndrome

  • Some inherited genetic mutations

Purple for Pancreatic

Our Purple for Pancreatic campaign is raising funds to build a dedicated Patient Support Service for patients with cancers of the upper digestive system in NZ and their whānau. This means:

- Providing vital guidance and care for patients and their families navigating a gut cancer diagnosis.
- Connecting Kiwis with trusted information and resources so they never feel alone on their journey.
- Strengthening support networks nationwide, giving patients the help they need, when they need it most. Learn more here.

We are proud to be Aotearoa New Zealand's representative on the World Pancreatic Cancer Coalition. This Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, we support their "Hello Pancreas" campaign for the early detection of pancreatic cancer to save lives.
